Accounting Manager/Controller

Bring your accounting expertise to a very established, privately owned retailer, service and maintenance provider! The company has several locations in the greater bay area plus a strong eCommerce presence, with fun products and a great team of people, and are continuing to grow and diversify. This is a full-time onsite employee position, 2 blocks from BART and near the San Francisco airport.

The Accounting Manager supervises a small staff handling daily accounting, and directly handles all G/L, financials, period-end close, inventory accounting, cash flow forecasting, KPI metrics reporting, assuring that the Company's financial position is both planned and controlled allowing Management to operate on a financially informed, proactive basis. You will also manage a software upgrade. Strong accounting experience from a retail/service environment is desired, with great leadership skills.

The position focuses on the financial conditions, operating efficiency, strategic planning and economic growth of all segments of the company. The Accounting Manager is expected to alert the Principals of any fiscal irregularities so that corrective or preventative measures can be taken. In addition, the Accounting Manager serves as the Human Resources and Benefits director and assures the company operates in compliance with federal and state regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ability to wear multiple hats and work effectively in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial company environment. Desire and willingness to dig into the details and be hands on, leading by example
Lead the financial planning and control processes of the company, including preparing cash flow forecasts, tracking and reporting key performance indicators, directing department-level budgeting, and preparing and reviewing month-end and year-end financial reports
Actively participate in the development and implementation of corporate policies, process improvements and strategic planning
Determine, implement and evaluate accounting internal control procedures and practices
Participate in the development, implementation, integration and updating of the organizations ERP software systems and related procedures and processes
Plan, manage and coordinate the activities of accounting personnel, including AP, AR (including credit and collections), GL, Payroll, Benefits & HR, warranty processing, inventory integrity, and payroll/commission functions, including timecard entry, payroll preparation, PR check/direct deposit activities and year-end reports, including W2s and 1099s
Share responsibility with principals for reviewing and administering on-going bank and risk management (insurance) relationships
Interface with Sales, Operations and Purchasing to proactively manage inventory control; participate in defining and guiding inventory processes and drive operational efficiencies
Administer internal control practices and procedures with respect to assets, receipts, expenditures and cost allocations, including reconciling general ledger accounts, reviewing and signing AP and PR checks, monitoring daily deposits and activity on the line of credit, and preparing or reviewing required journal entries
Review and reconcile excise and payroll tax accounts; prepare tax reports and ensure that filings are made.
Assist Company's CPA firm in preparing reviewed annual statements, related reports and Federal tax returns
Track fixed asset additions and deletions, calculate depreciation and prepare annual property tax affidavits
Conduct new hire orientations and secure related employment forms; update company handbook; manage health insurance enrollments and changes
Ensure month end/quarterly/yearly closes are done accurately and on time.
Evaluate, implement and be responsible for employee benefits/insurance plan
Back up staff as needed for day to day accounting tasks - reconciliations, payments, payroll etc.
Communicate, collaborate and coordinate meetings with department managers on financials goals, and improving accounting process and workflow
Help in tax planning and tax strategy and working with outside CPA.


Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration
15+ years accounting, with at least 5 years in accounting management experience
Proficient in Microsoft Office Software, especially Excel, and experience with integrated ERP software systems (SAGE is a plus ) - installation/upgrade experience preferred
Strong attention to details
Knowledge and expertise in accounting practices, theory and systems
Proven leadership and management skills
History of success in implementing change
Expertise in a retail/service environment and inventory accounting preferred
Proven experience in identifying and evaluating strategic opportunities
Analytical and resourceful
Excellent communication skills
Understands and lives company values
